Corporate Philanthropy Day - AT&T Addresses the Homework Gap

Last month we recognized International Corporate Philanthropy Day. Each year on the fourth Monday in February, it is an international advocacy day intended to celebrate corporate-community partnerships, highlight the importance of collectively addressing the pressing challenges of today, and to encourage further corporate community investment.

In honor of International Corporate Philanthropy Day, we'd like to highlight a few organizations whose recent efforts are making an impact in their local communities.

Last month Campbell Soup Company kicked off a program to reduce childhood obesity and hunger in Camden, N.J. The company plans to invest $10 million over a 10-year period with the goal of reducing childhood obesity and hunger by 50 percent in Camden.

The Alcoa Foundation announced the expansion and launch of several environmental programs focused on the sustainability themes of Reduce, Recycle, Replenish and Measure. The programs represent a total investment of $3 million.

In December 2021, AT&T announced a $2 billion commitment over the next 3 years to address the digital divide and homework gap. Within Texas alone, where AT&T is headquartered, millions of students do not have adequate access to the internet or space within their homes to study and complete homework, making it difficult for them to concentrate, keep up with classmates, and stay encouraged about learning.

Along with building internet-connected learning centers within needed communities, AT&T volunteers have been busy during their events in February and March addressing the homework gap.

Remote and in-person volunteers built pillow lap desks, custom organizer desks, and stress balls for students that need them most within their local community and wrote letters to the students receiving their donations.

The hands-on construction process was at times humbling, therapeutic, and a reminder that our actions have the ability to touch the lives of others.

During the conference break on this day, AT&T volunteers were able to construct hundreds of supplies that will help students have a more comfortable and organized workspace within their homes.

The completed projects were delivered to three non-profits within the Dallas area that work directly with the children and families that need them most.
