Intro to China

The Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square and the Great Wall - some of the most iconic places in the world in one country! On this trip you will have the chance to see things like the Terracotta Warriors by day and Shanghai by night. You will get to learn about the history that helped shape the world. On top of that, you’ll get to see sights, eat awesome food and meet some interesting people along the way. This tour is also filled with some of the best service projects that you will ever be a part of.

Tour Highlights

Great Wall of China: Built along an east-to-west line across the historical northern borders of China in order to protect the Chinese empire against raids and invasions of the various nomadic groups of the Eurasian Steppe
Forbidden City: Consisting of more than 9,000 rooms and spread over 250 acres, this huge palace complex was built in the 15th century.
Tiananmen Square (Tiananmen Guangchang): Located in the heart of China it is the site for massive parades, events and rallies. 
Summer Palace (Yiheyuan): Once a summer retreat for emperors, this massive park is a retreat for everyone! You can relax, stroll ancient pavilions, mansions, temples, bridges and huge lakes. When you are done, have a drink at a tea-house.
Tian Tan Buddha (Big Buddha): A VERY large bronze statue of Buddha Shakyamuni, completed in 1993.
Ningbo Sustainable Urbanization Project: A project to improve urban public space and mobility for people with disabilities.

The origin of the word “China” derives from the Qin dynasty.

Throughout the century, the name of the capital of China has changed. It has been known as Dadu, Yanjing, and Beiping. Peking or Beijing means “Northern Capital”.

China is considered to be the oldest civilization with some historians marking 6000 BC as the beginning of the Chinese civilization.

China has the world’s longest used written language.

As of July 2012, China has the largest population in the world with over 1.3 billion people.
