This U.S. State Has Two Official Languages

  • Between 1810 and 1895, it was ruled by its own monarchy with kings and queens.

  • Gambling is illegal.

  • You won't see any billboards across the landscape (they were outlawed in the 1920's).

  • The tallest mountain in the world is found here.

Do you know which state it is? Here are a few more clues:

  • Most sunscreens are banned.

  • In the culture found here, it is custom to take off your shoes before entering someone's home, no matter the occasion.

  • You can mail a coconut from here.

  • Aloha!

On August 20, 1959, Hawaii became the 50th state. It has two official languages: English and Hawaiian. The Hawaiian Islands are an archipelago of eight major islands, several atolls, and numerous smaller islets in the North Pacific Ocean, extending 1,500 miles from the island of Hawaii in the south to northernmost Ocean Island. Hawaii is the only U.S. state that is not geographically connected to North America. It is part of the Polynesia sub region of Oceania.

Did you think that Mount Everest was the tallest mountain in the world standing at 29,032 feet? Well, yes and no. It depends on the details of the measurements! When measured from the base of the ocean instead of sea level, Mauna Kea (on the Big Island) is 33,496 feet tall.

The people of Hawaii are very friendly. They greet with a hug, not a handshake. In this state, don't be surprised if you receive a hug to say hello, goodbye, nice to meet you, thank you, etc.

The Big Island of Hawaii is growing by about 42 acres each year! It is home to the Kilauea volcano which has been actively erupting for the past 30 years. Each time it erupts, it spills into the ocean and adds more landmass.
