Joshua Tree National Park
Crafted over millions of years by rain, wind, relentless sun and extreme temperatures, Joshua Tree National Park stretches over nearly 800,000 acres of southern California desert terrain. Sweeping, grand in scale and populated by granite monoliths and massive rock and boulder formations, the park offers wonder to eco-travelers, adventurers, and naturalists.
While the rugged terrain may appear uninhabited at first glance, the park is home to a variety of plant life as well as large herds of desert bighorn sheep, black tailed jack rabbits, coyotes and kangaroo rats as well as a number of smaller mammals. Since it lies along the Pacific migratory bird flyway, many large groups of migrating birds can be spotted during the winter months. Both the flora and fauna here have adapted to thrive in the region's harsh climate.
Two large desert ecosystems, the Mojave and the Colorado, come together to form the Joshua Tree National Park. The Colorado covers the eastern portion of the park at elevations below 3,000 feet and the Mojave occupies the higher and cooler western portion. The Joshua trees, the park's namesake, are found only in the Mojave desert.
Star gazing, hiking, bird watching, rock climbing, mountain biking, sitting in a jacuzzi or around a fire are just a few of the activities you can enjoy here year-round.
The park’s namesake is the Joshua Tree, a member of the agave family with a distinctive appearance. The Joshua Tree was revered by American Indian tribes because its leaves provided durable materials for baskets and footwear, while the buds and seeds made a healthy addition to their food supply.
